Chapter History

The Delta Zeta chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha at Sam Houston State University was founded on May 16, 1959, marking the beginning of more than six decades of sisterhood on campus.

Before achieving national affiliation with ZTA, the chapter’s fifty-five charter members belonged to the Philomethean Literary Society, known locally as the “Philos.” The name stems from the Greek word philomath, meaning “lover of learning,” reflecting the group’s dedication to scholarship, personal growth, and mutual support. When the Philos were welcomed into Zeta Tau Alpha, they carried that identity forward, laying a foundation built on friendship, learning, and service.

As part of Zeta Tau Alpha’s mid-century expansion across Texas campuses, Delta Zeta quickly established a presence at SHSU. Over the following decades, members contributed to campus life through leadership roles, academic achievement, and philanthropic initiatives. In alignment with ZTA’s national focus on breast cancer education and awareness, Delta Zeta actively supports the Think Pink® initiative and community partnerships that empower education and advocacy.

Today, Delta Zeta continues to honor its origins as a chapter rooted in scholarship and sisterhood. From its Philomethean beginnings to its modern identity, the chapter remains a place where Bearkats find purpose, leadership, and connection. The legacy of the Philos lives on in every tradition, milestone, and memory shared, reminding each sister that throughout every season of college and beyond, she is never alone.
